Fort Ticonderoga gets US general's 1776 letter | News

TICONDEROGA, N.Y. (AP) - A letter written by an important American military leader during the Revolutionary War has been acquired by Fort Ticonderoga.          

Curators at the tourist attraction in the eastern Adirondacks say the letter was written by Gen. Philip Schuyler on Nov. 23, 1776, to Col. Anthony Wayne, the Continental Army officer who was taking command of the key fortification on Lake Champlain's southern end.          

Curator Christopher Fox says the document provides details of the challenges facing Ticonderoga's officers that enable historians to better understand the living conditions American soldiers endured in the winter of 1776-1777.          

Schuyler was a wealthy landowner from Albany who served as commander in charge of the northern frontier during the early years of the American Revolution. Schuyler's letter to Wayne was recently acquired by Fort Ticonderoga through donor support.
